Course Description: 

We will read in Latin selected poems of Catullus and Horace.  The aims of this class are:

1) To learn to read Catullus and Horace with understanding and enjoyment.  By concentrating on morphology, syntax, and vocabulary, to improve the reading knowledge of Latin acquired in previous classes.  

2) To learn to scan the meters of Latin lyric poetry, and to appreciate how meter affects our response to what we read. 

3) To discuss the meaning and significance of Catullus and Horace’s poetry.
