This course will examine the relationship between Roman wall painting and the earlier pictorial traditions of the peoples of ancient Italy, particularly the Etruscans. Material covered will include: Etruscan tomb paintings—funerary banquets, death demons, and underworld imagery; the painted interiors of luxurious Roman houses and villas on the Bay of Naples; illusionistic architecture and paneled walls in sumptuous colored marble; painted portraits; sacro-idyllic landscapes; and xenia (ancient still-life paintings).
